Your Tutor

Let me introduce myself, tell you a little about my background, and let you know why I know I will be an asset to work with you while you undertake training to master an easy-to-learn real-time theory on the stenotype machine - StenEd®

Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, and now living in California, USA, I grew up speaking and writing both English and French. My interest in shorthand began as a teenager, and not surprisingly, the prospect of preserving the spoken word via verbatim reporting fascinated me from the very beginning. I eventually obtained certification in English as an official court reporter with the Bar of Montreal and have been freelance reporting for many years.

Because there were no court reporting schools in Montreal when I was trying to enter the profession, I know what it’s like to study on my own. I really had no help at the time, but I did find the National Court Reporters Association (formerly National Shorthand Reporters Association), and so the monthly Journal became my source of information. I took a correspondence course in machine shorthand with the Stenotype Institute of Jacksonville, Florida, under the tutelage of Thyra D. Ellis, an amazing woman who was a Merit writer (260 words per minute). I benefited so much from that course, even though it was all done through the post office mail (snail mail) and everything took time to get feedback. With the world of the Internet, we now have a much easier way to enter the profession, and can get answers and help in no time at all.

I am committed to sharing with others what continues to excite and amaze me. Teaching and sharing have been so much a part of my working experience. I am patient and understanding and have an ability to put myself in the student’s position. Your progress is of my utmost concern, and my enthusiasm for verbatim reporting can be contagious! I know I can help you achieve your goal to become an excellent reporter, and let’s face it, you certainly don’t want to be “average.”
